A Non-Governmental organization, Women Environmental Programme (WEP), today flagged of its empowerment programme for violent extremist prone areas in Benue state.
The project themed, “Connecting Women and Youth in Violent Extremist Prone Areas through Empowerment and Skills Acquisition Phase II” was launched at an inception workshop held at Hallydays Resort, Makurdi, Benue State.
It hopes to address the poverty, lack of opportunities or sense of purpose that has plagued people from communities and has fast become the attraction to joining violent extremist groups
In her welcome address, the Ag. Executive Director of WEP, Ms. Anne Marie-Abaagu welcomed all present and thanked participants for availing themselves to be part of the ground-breaking event of this project. She emphasized the need for all stakeholders to work in synergy to achieve strengthened resilience to violence extremism not only in the proposed LGAs of intervention but the State as a whole.
On his part, the project manager of the project, Mr. Cliff Gai highlighted that the proposed project shall be implemented under a consortium hosting Angel Support Foundation (ASF) & Foundation for Justice, Development and Peace (FJDP), and managed by WEP. He assured that both organizations were equally credible, experienced and have a track record of PVE related work in the six intended LGs of intervention.
The where the project is slated to be implemented Ado, Agatu, Buruku, Guma, Kwande & Logo.
