An Anti-Corruption Watch Dog, Global Initiative for Women and Children (GIWAC) has accused the Director of Engineering Services of National Broadcasting Commission, Engineer Friday Ukwela’ of “extortion, abuse of office and corruption.”
In a letter sent to EFCC and ICPC signed by the chairman of the group, Abdullahi Muhammad Tanimu, the group accused Engr Ukwela of charging illegal fees from applicants seeking radio and television licenses.
“Engr Ukwela, for the last ten years has made it a duty to charge applicants an illegal levy he termed Technical Drawings and Consultancy Fees to the range of 5m to 10m naira. ”
” We are ready to present witnesses, who were subjected to this unwarranted extortions by Ukwela for the licenses,” the group added.
The group alleged that it noted with dismay how the likes of Ukwela are making mockery of President’s Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts at fighting corruption in the country.
It added that “it is unfortunate that those who apply for the licences in order to contribute their quota to the progress and development of Nigeria were denied licences because they refused to succumb to Ukwela’s antics and extortion,” the petition stated.
The petition also called on the anti-graft agencies to beam their searchlight on the lifestyles of Engr. Ukwela’s, stating that: “we equally want EFCC and ICPC to check and investigate Ukwela’s fortunes in order to ascertain whether his stupendous wealth has corresponded with his earnings as a director in the federal civil service as he always flies higher class airlines.”
