The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said that more than 18 states in Nigeria are yet to implement the N30.000 national minimum wage for their workers.
NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba who said this while speaking at the 47th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) said workers would do anything including matching on the street to protest against plans by the governors to borrow about N17 trillion from the pension funds.
He said the funds are not for borrowing but for workers to get something after they retired.
Comrade wabba criticizes the governors for such a move because according to him more than 18 states in the country are yet to implement the N30.000 minimum wage and wonder why they will want to borrow money meant for workers after retirement.
“Pension money is not for borrowing, pension money is in the retirement savings of workers it cannot be borrowed. It’s like money in your savings account that nobody can borrow the money. You must go through the bank and in this case, you must go through the PFAs and their guidelines even the guidelines they want to play down, to the glory of God, the board of pencom commission has been constituted and I stand here to represent all of you.
“We are not going to agree, we must bring pencom to standard so that people that have not contributed can key into that, as I speak to you not less than 5% of the states are keying into the contributory pension yet they want to borrow the money.
“Bulk of the money is from federal government workers and private-sector workers so how do you want to borrow from where you have not sown? It’s not free money and let me sound a bit of warning, any day that we hear they took our money; everybody is going to be on the street to protect our hard-earned money. The money belongs to workers, we contribute that money so that when we retire we can have something for retirement so they have no say whatsoever, both the principal and the capital belongs to us”.
Speaking further, Comrade Wabba said,” in other climes, the teachers’ money and the municipal money is in trillions of dollars it’s even managed by the unions because its pension money for the workers, not the way it is being handled here so let me sound a warning to assure all of your workers from across the length and breadth of this country, to say that our money will be saved because of the way it is structured the money its not with pencom, it is with the individual retirement savings of workers and each month you receive an alert when the money is paid when interest is paid you receive alert”.
Speaking on the challenges workers and Nigerian, comrade Wabba who is also the president of International Trade Union Confederation said labour henceforth interrogates how leaders emerge in the country.
He lamented the situation whereby Nigeria is named the poverty capital of the world, adding despite the Gods giving resources at her disposal.
“The situation must change to put food on the tables of Nigerians but importantly, to address the issue of inequality. I see no reason why the present dispensation, Nigeria will be the poverty capital of the world. I don’t think that is the right thing because we have everything that God has blessed us with in terms of natural resources, human resource what then is the problem, is it financing the human resources that God has given us, there is a problem and the fact remains we need to interrogate even the structure and importantly, how we are able to transit from one regime to another in other to provide quality leadership”.
On the implementation of the N30.000 national minimum wage, Wabba said “More than 18 states are yet to implement the minimum wage and these are the same people saying that they want to borrow our pension money”.
