IMD 2022: ITUC-AFRICA, ILO To Hold High Level Session
The African Regional office of International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-AFRICA) in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation would on 19th December 2022 hold a high level session to mark the 2022 International Migrants Day.
This year celebration which will take place during ATUMNET event in Kigali, Rwanda (19 to 21 of December 2022), would be discussing the contribution of migrant workers to development.
According to a Concept Note issued by the ITUC-AFRICA, Migrant workers contribute to growth and development in both countries of origin as well as of destination.
The ITUC-AFRICA stressed that while countries of origin greatly benefit from migrant workers remittances; the skills acquired during the migration experience as well as transfer of knowledge and technology; destination countries benefit from availability of labour at different skills levels to address market needs, payment of taxes and contribution to social security system.
“As part of the celebration of the International Migrant Day 2022, the ILO in partnership with ITUC-Africa is organising a High-Level Panel to put emphasis on and celebrate the contribution of migration to development and empower migrant workers.
“The dialogue will take place on the 19th on December during ATUMNET event in Kigali, Rwanda (19 to 21 of December 2022).
“The High-level panel will focus on the positive contribution of Migrants workers to development in country of origin and destination, concentrating on the optimisation of such benefits through right-based approach to labour migration, effective and efficient governance of labour migration, and promoting safe, orderly, and regular pathways to labour migration.
“The session is part of the ILO campaign #MoreThanAMigrantWorker which aims to raise awareness about the positive contribution of African migrant workers (within and beyond Africa) to the development of their countries of origin and destination and contribute to changing the perception and social behaviours around migrant workers in general, and from Africa.
“The dialogue aligns to ITUC’s theme to commemorate the 2022 International Day as well “Extending solidarity to and celebrating
the contributions of migrant workers”

On the objectives of the session,” The overall objective of the High-Level Panel is to recognize, appreciate and celebrate migrant workers for their contribution to development in ways to seeking better protection for them.
To achieve that, the High-level dialogue will provide a platform to discuss How do Migrant workers contribute to the social and economic development of their countries of destination and country of origin?
How to optimize the developmental potential of labour migration: what
tools and recommendations , What is the role of diaspora associations? and What is the way forward?
