Insecurity: Niger Youth Protests, Block Highways

Concerned by the endless incessant attack on Lagos-Kaduna Highway, by armed banditry and kidnappers in the adjoining forest, Youths in Kagara, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger state, Wednesday, staged a protest carrying placards blocked the road in the area.

Some of the youths were chanting anti government slogan of in activeness to the plight of displaced people sacked by bandits in the last three days consecutively.

One of the youth, Jamilu, lamented the poor conditions of the IDP’s camp in Kagara ranging from lack of food, water and makeshift sanitary facilities.

The youths also called on the state government to urgently, send food and other basics necessities to the affected displaced persons from Kukoki, Rafin Wayam, Rafin Kwakwa, Gidan Dogo-gurgu, Maranji and Hanawanka.

The protest is coming barely two days after armed bandits numbering about two hundred had overrun Kokoki village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

Eyewitnesses told our reporter in Minna, that, the bandits stormed Kukoki village, while shooting sporadically as well as beaten innocent villagers. About 120 people mostly women and children that escaped were seeking refuge in Kagara, Rafi Local government area of the state. Women and Children were seen crossing a stream to a safe zone in Kagara town.

Meanwhile, Niger state police Command has confirmed the killing of one Abubakar Kaura and the abduction of three others by unknown gunmen who invaded Kusherki Community in Rafi Local Government Area of the State.

Confirming the incident recently, the Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar said the Police is on the trail of the gunmen.

According to Abubakar, “we can not allow kidnappers, bandits to take over Niger state. We will do everything within our reach to bring the perpetrators to book”.

An eyewitness told our Reporter that the attackers invaded several houses at about 1am while it was raining heavily and kidnapped three people.
