Cross River State Commissioner for Health Dr. Betta Edu has announced free testing of Hepatitis to mothers and children to curb it spread in the state. This gesture is part of activities marking this year’s celebration.
Speaking to newsmen, Dr. Edu stated that the Ministry of Health has rolled out activities to mark this year’s Hepatitis Day with the theme; “Hepatitis-free future,” with a strong focus on preventing Hepatitis B (HBV)
She said Screening for Hepatitis will take place at Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Hope Waddell Parish, Calabar beginning from Sunday 26th July 2020, and will continue on Monday at the state ministry of Health.

The Commissioner added that the exercise will be carried out simultaneously across the state at selected secondary healthcare facilities. She used the occasion to employ members of the public to partake in the exercise.
“Members of the public are hereby advised to take advantage of this year’s event and get screened for Hepatitis.” She said
The Health boss outlined five main strains of the hepatitis virus to include A, B, C, D, and E, noting that Hepatitis B and C are the most common causes of deaths with a global fatality of over 1.4 million lives lost each year.

She said amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, viral hepatitis has continued to claim thousands of lives necessitating intervention by the Cross River State Government under the leadership of Prof Ben Ayade in conducting free screening and Vaccination in the state.
World Hepatitis Day, is observed July 28 every year, and it aims at raising global awareness of hepatitis — a group of infectious diseases known as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E — and encourage prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
