Nasarawa Govt Arrests 28 Commercial Motorcyclists For Violating Sanitation Laws
Nasarawa State Government has arrested 28 commercial motorcyclists popularly called “Okada” riders” in the State for violating the State Environmental Sanitation laws.
Yakubu Kwanta, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources made the disclosure on Saturday in an interview with journalists after monitoring the monthly sanitation exercise in Lafia.
The Commissioner who was represented by Alh. Abubakar Mohammed, Chief Environmental Officer of the Ministry, said those arrested were found conveying passengers from one place to the other during the sanitation exercise.
“We went on a house to house and street to street sanitation enforcement today and what we discovered was that all residents, shop owners and motorists complied to the exercise.
“However, commercial motorcyclists were found moving from place to the other with passengers and we arrested 28 of them and they have been charged to our mobile court for prosecution.
“We had earlier informed the leadership of the commercial motorcycles association in the state to talk to their members to adhere to the State Environmental laws but they are still violating our laws.
“If they continue, we will ban the use of commercial motorcycles in Lafia and the state at large,” he said.
The Commissioner assured that the ministry would continue to enforce the exercise for the benefit of the people of the state.

He explained that the last Saturday of every month in the state is scheduled for sanitation exercise, but had to be brought back to today because of Christmas celebration.
He, therefore commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his commitment towards providing the dividends of democracy to the people.
Kwanta therefore urged the people of the state to vote the governor and all other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming general elections.
