The African Trade Union Migration Network ( ATUMNET) has revealed that members capacity would be enhanced on the basic knowledge of responsible and strategic use of ILO ILS System to protect the rights of migrant workers.
ATUMNET with Membership cut across Trade Unions, Civil society, and the media meet annoully to review progress on her goals which includes the need to advance the actualisation of a decent work agenda for all, including migrant workers, and to contribute to the attainment of safe, regular and orderly migration by employing a rights-based approach to labour migration.
This year meeting which was earlier planned to take place at hybrid mode, with physical meeting in Port Louis, Mauritius from 25 – 27 September 2023, will now be holding in a later date due to an unforseen circumstances.
According to a Concept Note released by the Secretariat of ATUMNET also said the meeting is expected to Improve protection and promotion of the rights of migrant workers through the advocacy and voices of trade unions and civil society organisations in labour migration governance spaces and processes.
The meeting will further enhanced Trade unions, civil society and Journalists alliance on deepening social dialogue, inclusion and collaboration to ensure better migration and labour migration governance achieved.
“The network remains active and focused on its engagement within the different levels of migration and labour governance spaces at national, regional and global levels. It meets at least once annually to review its work, assessing the impact registered based on the activities it conducts directly and through its focal persons at the national, sectoral and sub-regional levels. Its annual meeting is also used to build capacities and monitor its action plan.
“The annual meeting also provides an opportunity to update members on the developments of key global migration governance processes. These include the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).
“The principal idea in engaging on these frameworks is to seek an African agenda in terms of inputs to these processes to ensure migrant workers concerns are well articulated and trade unions can influence this process.
“The network plans to meet this year to recalibrate its engagement and also to prepare its report that shall be presented to the 5th ITUC-Africa Congress slated for 27 – 29 November 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya”.
On the rational of the meeting , the group hinted that “In 2024, the second round of the African Regional Review (ARR) of the Global Compact on Migration (GCM) will be organized and hosted by the United Nations Migration Network. It would be necessary for trade unions in Africa to prepare adequately to engage in the process.
“Building on the first round of regional reviews of 2020, the intention is to use the space to showcase alternative approaches for working solutions recognizing what has worked and what should be done to improve the ongoing processes as well as being candid about the challenges and the approaches that are regressing or not working. ATUMNET has identified 8 of the GCM objectives as the focus of its advocacy, campaigns and engagement where it will submit its perspectives during the review preparatory meetings and review.”.
