The Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA) has call for partnership with sub national and development organisations, like the International Labour Organisation (ILO) so as to ensure the rights of migrant workers are protected .
President of TUCTA , Comrade Tumaini Nyamhokya stated this Monday at the opening session of a meeting of Africa Trade Union Migration Network (ATUMNET) holding in Dar es Salam , Tanzania.
Comrade Nyamhokya further lamented the plights of migrant workers around the world, adding that collaborations with stakeholders would help to eradicate such treatment .
“We understand the vital role of collective action in reshaping the narrative around migration governance, particularly in light of the challenges faced by migrant workers, especially women, who are disproportionately affected.
“The plight of women migrant workers is of great concern. They face a myriad of injustices, from gender-based discrimination to exploitation and violence, both during their journeys and in destination countries.
“Additionally, male migrant workers grapple with challenges, often resorting to irregular migration due to limited opportunities, exposing themselves to severe human rights violations,. Yet amidst these adversities, there is hope.
“Through collective and inclusive actions, we firmly believe that these issues can be addressed, Collaboration with sup-national and development organizations, such as the African regional economic communities, and the ILO, provides us with the necessary Support to effect tangible change”.
Comrade Nyamhokya while applauding the ITUC-Africa for her efforts toward ensuring the defense of migrant workers , said
today sIgnifies a significant milestone in addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time: the better governance of labour migration and the protection of the rights of migrant workers.
On the theme of the conference, “Contributing to better labour migration governance and protection of the rights of migrant workers through improved social dialogue, trade union cooperation, and advocacy action,” he said this resonates deeply with the core values and commitments of TUCTA
” As a labour movement, our goals are clear: the actualisation of decent work 1or all, the promotion of safe and orderly migration, and the protection of migrant workers through strong, independent workers Organisations .
“To achieve this, we must continue to empower our trade union members, advocate for Ratification and domestication of key ILO conventions, and enhance visibility and effectiveness through capacity building and advocacy engagements .
“The outcomes we seek from this meeting are clear enhanced capacity improved advocacy, strengthened alliances , and a sharper focus on improving labour migration governance in Africa . Comrades I hope that through fruitful discussions, we shall achieve these outcomes. “.
In his remark, the general Secretary of ITUC -Africa Comrade Akhator Joel Odigie said the meeting will focused on addressing among others the push and force factors on labour migration .
