World TB Day: NTBLCP Sensitizes Community Leaders On The Danger Of TB, Others

By Blessing David

Community leaders at the mabushi satellite town in the FCT have been called upon to take their health seriously by making themselves available to test for TB and as well decongest themselves daily as they go about their daily activities as tuberculosis remains a deadly disease that must be eliminated from the society.

The call was made by the National Tuberculosis Leprosy and Buruli-Ulcer Control Programme (NTBLCP) as part of her activities to mark this year’s world tuberculosis day and to address the increasing cases of Tuberculosis amongst residents of Mabushi area following the need for more community engagements on information about TB.

Chief of the community, Chief Bawa Zakogi expressed Joy while speaking to the media yesterday in Abuja during the Advocacy and Sensitization meeting to Leaders of Mabushi community on the issues of TB in Nigeria, organized by the Nigeria Tuberculosis Leprosy and Buru ulcer programme NTBLCP.

According to the Madaki Bawa, he said that some residents including himself have had cough for over three weeks without knowing how to treat it but the visit of the NTBLCP has now given him an insight on how to go about it.

He commended the NTBLCP for bringing the sensitization program to Mabushi community amidst efforts to stop the spread of omicron virus, considering also that mabushi community is largely predisposed to Tuberculosis due to the rising population of people.

Responding, Program Manager for TB, Association for Reproductive and Family Health, Dr. John Osho, said the sensitization meeting with the elders is geared towards providing relevant information regarding TB as well as creating awareness on the community as well mobilize them towards the forth coming world TB day which is celebrated annually on the 24th of March.

Dr Osho added that it is important to address community spread of Tuberculosis via testing and treatment which is completely free, with the hope of organizing a free testing for the community on the 21st of March, stressing that TB is a killer disease that must be eliminated from the society completely.

Speaking in the same light, Stella Ekeh who is the Assistant Focal Person for Childhood Tuberculosis, emphasized that the testing and treatment for TB remains free hence it is imperative to identify more cases of TB that are still missing,so as to get them treated and managed especially children who have been infected by the disease at tender ages.

Mrs Eke continued that, tuberculosis is an aged long killer disease that is usually associated with cough and can kill fast especially when a person is infected with HIV/Aids, diabetes,as well as those with low body immunity, hence must be tackled with total committed.

She explained further that TB is a communicable disease that can spread to two or more persons especially when they are in crowded areas, adding that the testing for TB is different from Covid 19,as such it is necessary to pass the right information to the public which is why Mabushi was the first pot of call considering the way the houses are in clusters.

She added that the strategy for community was going to be a continuous process so as to drive home the message of information dissemination to the grassroots and this would continue on the health workers who are also the foot soldiers in the communities so they can also be adequately informed on the symptoms for TB and know how best to manage the patient when the need arises.
