With the just concluded 2019 General Elections, Nigeria have witnessed six of such since the advent of the fourth Republic in 1999. In each of these elections, leaders across board are elected to pilot the affairs of the nation for a given period of time. The story is same both in the upper and lower legislative chambers as practiced in Nigeria. Members of the parliaments are often treated to an elaborate swearing in where it principal officers emerges shortly after. The principal officers are however selected from amongst the parliamentarians. The legislature being a separate organ of government is expected to be independent so as to exercise it’s oversights functions as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution as amended. However, in Nigeria as in other parts of the African continent were democracy is still at it rudimentary stage, the process for the selection of principal officers in the parliament is sometimes characterized by lobbying from some external forces. As the new leadership of the National Assembly takes up the mantle of leadership, Nigerians across party, religious and ethnic persuasion hopes that the law makers will enact laws that will better the lots of the teeming populace without fear or favour. The 9th Assembly must prove beyond reasonable doubts that they are worthy of their titles by standing for truth and justice.
