ATUMNET Kigali Conference To Improve Synergy Between Journalists, Trade Unions Contribution To Labour Migration Governance’
The forthcoming conference of the
Africa Trade Union Migration Network (ATUMNET) holding in Kigali, Rwanda is aimed at improving the synergy between ATUMNET focal persons, trade unions and journalists in their quest to contribute to the success of labour migration governance in Africa, African Regional office of International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-AFRICA) has said.
The meeting which is holding between 19 to 21st December 2022 also includes the implementation of the Joint Labour Migration Project
(JLMP ) especially those relating to fair recruitment and the protection of the rights of migrant workers.
According to a statement by the ITUC-AFRICA office , said the theme of the conference is “Strengthening the capacity of the African Trade Union Migration Network
(ATUMNET) Focal Persons and Journalists on fair recruitment, ILS and union-tounion agreement and monitoring and reporting of activities”.
“ATUMNET with the support of the ILO, is organising a capacity building for its focal points and journalists to discuss, learn and share experiences on fair recruitment.
“This capacity-building initiative is borne from the urgency to give impetus to the effective implementation of the ATUMNET 2022 – 2024 Action Plan, in particular, pillars 6 and 7.,
“The training will also focus on International Labour Standards (ILS), union-to-union agreements and the theory of change, reporting and monitoring to optimise the benefits of Labour migration for migrant workers through efficient labour migration governance.
“Participants will further discuss the vital role trade union and journalists play in labour migration to benefit MW, their families, countries of origin and destinations.

“They will also reflect on the indicators to monitor such changes (aligning with the GCM and SDGs) and specific indicators relevant to trade unions.
” The meeting will also build capacities and competencies of the focal persons of ATUMNET and journalists theory of change on labour migration governance and the protection of African migrant workers ( results matrix);
“The training will ensure that a consolidated results matrix (theory of change) will be built based on the region’s various on-going implementation initiatives, particularly the ILO, IOM, AUC projects (such as the JLMPs, BRMM, FMPT/PIDD, SAMM, FAIRWAY), as well as ITUC initiatives.
“The meeting will be structured and conducted in a semi-formal format.
“The workshop will utilise presentations, discussions, high-level panel discussion and panel sessions to conduct the training.
“The workshop will be conducted in French and English, with interpretation services.
Participants will be allowed and encouraged to participate actively.
“Pre and post-workshop questionnaires will be developed and administered to the participants before and after the workshop.
“ITUC-Africa, ILO, IOM experts, African Union experts, and officials will be part of the facilitation team. Where necessary, workshop organisers will engage a consultant trainer’s services”.
