The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGWN) on Friday retired her General secretary Comrade Issa Aremu and Deputy General secretary Dele Ojo.
In a communique after her National Executive Council (NEC) , the union also replace comrade Issa Aremu with Ali Baba as the acting general secretary of the union.
The Union also elected Comrade John Adaji National President for a second team. Also are Comrade Frank Francis Michael as first Deputy President, Comrade Abdul Adamu as second Deputy President and Comrade Lawal Haruna as National Treasurer.
Comrade Usman Gambo, Comrade Peter Godonu, Comrade Abdulrahman Usman and Comrade Josephine Iweanya were elected National Trustees while Comrade Omokanye Saidu and Comrade Ezekiel Oluyemi were elected National Auditors of the union.
“The Conference was preceded by a National Administrative Council (NAC) and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Yar’Adua Centre during which vital decisions were taken.
“The decisions taken includes the immediate retirement of the General Secretary, Comrade Issa Aremu mni and Deputy General Secretary, Comrade Dele Ojo through a secret ballot vote after a motion to that effect failed through a counter motion. Since nature abhors vacuum, Comrade Ali Baba, Principal Assistant General ‘ Secretary was appointed the Ag. General Secretary of the Union”.
Addressing newsmen on the development, National President Comrade John Adaji said the conference agreed for the inclusion of the Chairperson of the Women Committee as member of the NAC in line with ‘the Union’s affirmative action on gender representation.
He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the signing of the Executive Order 003 on support for local content in procurement, forex ban for Textile importers, closure of borders to check smuggling, amongst other important decisions to salvage the Industry.
Comrade Adaji further demanded that the Federal Government institute a structured, consistent and sustained policy framework for accelerated growth in the manufacturing sector.
