The Nasarawa State chapter of the Sports Writers Association (SWAN) on Tuesday elected its new officials to pilot the affairs of the association for the next three years.
The new officials emerged after a peaceful re-run election that took place at the Nasarawa State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Lafia.
Mr Isacc Ukpoju of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Chairman of the electoral committee announced that Smah George of Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS) got 18 votes to defeat his opponent, Solomon Abari of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) who secured nine votes.
The electoral committee chairman had also announced that Umar Mohammed of DailyTrust was elected as Vice Chairman, Abel Leonard of The Sun Newspaper as Secretary Nehemiah Gwamna of Radio Nigeria Precious FM Lafia as Financial Secretary, and Esther Akaa of the Voice Newspaper as Treasurer.
In his goodwill message, Ikenna Okonkwo, National Secretary General of SWAN commended members of the association in the state and the candidates for their display of maturity during the process of the election.
He congratulated the winners and urged them to carry others, especially their opponents along and adhere to the statute of the association and their oaths of office.
In his acceptance speech, the newly sworn-in chairman appreciated members for speaking through their votes for him and other officials and pledged not to disappoint them.
The Nasarawa State SWAN chairman also promised to work with his opponent and all members of the association toward making it viable in the state.
He said that the association under him would partner with the government and other stakeholders to promote sports development in the state.
The re-run took place on Tuesday, July 9 because the chairmanship candidates got a tie vote of 13 in the earlier election of June 6. (NAN).
