Every great nation of the world, considers education as it bed rock. In Nigeria as in some other countries, the philosophy is different which has led to a dwindling economy and human capital development. A few years back, the highest bidders resorted to sending their wards abroad or better still classy private universities in the country, living the masses at the mercies of poorly equipped public institutions. This development has led to lack of motivation for the teeming populace as some now considers education as a waste of both time and resources . In View of this ugly trend, some stakeholders in the education sector have resign to fate hoping for a utopia to deliver them off the gullies. In the passage of time however, some glimse of hope shined in the university of Calabar as Prof. Zana Akpagu took the wheels. Being an alumni of the university who understood the plights of Nigerian students, he swiftly embarked on students oriented policies that have re-positioned the institution in the scheme of things. His leadership has decongested crowdy lectures owing to the proliferation of lecture halls, he has increased hostel space for Nigerian students, he has improved on both power and water supplies to these hostels, he has maintained a cordial relationship with the students body and above all making Unical as often called, a citadel of research. Today, the university have more affiliate centers in a bid to impact lives academically, he has also spread the reach of Unical microfinance bank to the hinterland. The university has gone digital as a result of the internet access. Indeed Zana is working and Unical is flying. Zana has set the pace for others to follow.
