On October 1-1960, Nigeria walked out of the prison Gates of Colonialism with shoulders high.
Both the highs and lows, the have and have-not, the elites and commoners celebrated with fanfare as freedom finally smiled at them like a beautiful bride. The Advent of this bride brought about a change of status quo as the country is since governed by a Nigerian.
This day has remained evergreen in the hearts of all and sundry as it is believed to a be a reward for the sacrifices of her fallen heroes. The pioneers of this Noble course had envisioned even development that will visit the country like the sun rays.
Successive administration from October 1960 till date, have continued to struggle in bringing to manifestation the mantra of Independence as earlier envisaged.
In line with this pedagogy, many have succeeded in changing the narratives for the better with others serving as monumental failures. 59 years down the journey of self governance, many still wonder if Nigeria has lived up to the expectations of her founding fathers.
In marking this year’s anniversary, president Muhammadu Buhari have addressed the nation with what many described as gutless and hopeless speech. In his speech, the president challenged Nigerians to be law abiding as according to him, change begins with them. On the issue of security, he thanked the Nigerian Armed forces for living up to the challenges of terrorism. He further stated that the resucitation of the police ministry is geared towards giving internal security a facelift. This speech from the presidency, is said to lack substance as the country is fast deteriorating.
In all fairness and commitment, Nigerians deserves more as insecurity is in the increase. Minimum wage for the Nigerian workers is more political than realistic. 59 years after Independence, darkness have continued to envelope the nation like hade. Public schools in Nigeria are cemeteries of the downtrodden.
Justice today is reserved for the highest bidders. Inefficiencies and ineptitude are glorified above meritocracy and credibility. Unemployment and social vices are the order of the day because ideology is sacrificed in the alter of thuggeries and ganstarism. Health care facilities in the country are begging for a state of emergency.
Nigeria must grow beyond rhetoric, our leaders must take greater responsibilities by creating the enabling environment for everyone to be inspired to aspire.
Till these and many is achieved, Nigeria Independence will remain but a burden. God bless Nigeria.
